04/04/08 - The Summer Slowdown

In creating my portfolio, I have inadvertently created a highly seasonal group of sites. September to March is usually the peak, with the summer being not a great time for the group.

This cropped up last year and I introduced my (not really that successful) Hotel Room UK site and Lingerie Helper, which needs a radical makeover.

I suppose this is the point where it's important to keep complacency at bay. More

10/03/08 - So What Have I been Up To?

There’s a million dollar question. Part of my new resolution was to spend more time building websites than posting on here. Posting about my experience as an affiliate helps my readers but unfortunately doesn’t help my bank balance. That means if I want to make money, I have to move away from posting here.

It’s a shame as I enjoy it. I enjoy getting the feedback from readers. I enjoy the fact that someone somewhere enjoys reading what I have to say.

That doesn’t answer the question though :-)

Here’s what I’ve been up to. More

22/02/08 - Out With The Old, In With The New Design

Compare Sat Nav has been the subject of an overhaul over the past few weeks, which also goes to explain why I've not posted here much.

This post explains some of the new features I've built into CSN, the logic behind those features and a before and after shot! More

01/02/08 - Thanks To Phil Hancox...

... For reminding us that it's 11 months to Christmas!

His post starts with "Seriously, where has January gone?" which is coincidentally what I was thinking when I realised I'd set a horrid pink background for this blog in February!

January seems to have flown by though what I expected to have completed by January has nearly been completed. I'm currently running a couple of days behind where I thought I'd be.

Does it matter? More

02/01/08 - A New Year, A Renewed Persistence

2007 has been and gone. For me, it was financially better than 2006. Hopefully 2008 will prove more lucrative.

I've got a couple of websites I need to roll out soon and I've got a couple of redesigns looming. Christmas tought me a few things and highlighted a few areas I need to improve on to progress in this business. More

12/10/07 - Time Just Disappears

I'm sure time goes faster when I'm working on my websites. I'm sure I get 3 hours days unlike those days that most people get.

To combat this, and to tie in with my Christmas planning, I've made a time plan! More

24/05/07 - POLL: It's All Too Slow

I remember a character from Bertha (TV classic!) called Mr Duncan and he used to say "It's all too slow". And that's the case here. I need to accelerate this project further.

I am further forward with it now than I was a few months ago, what with Lingerie Helper and Hotel Room UK coming online, plus a remodel of Compare Sat Nav. But I'm not getting enough traffic to grow the sites further. More

17/04/07 - Project Progress April 07

I thought I would post a project progress report as I haven't done one of those for a while. Plus, it gives those who haven't got a clue about my project some background info. More

20/03/07 - Current Project Progress

I'm try to establish what it is I should focus on.

I have too many ideas and now need to start focussing. More

21/02/07 - Plodding Along

I have get the foundations laid for a very interesting website that I am hoping will become the difference between an OK project and a project that proves a point.

I'll release more details soon.

In other news, Rob Powell has noticed a lag in Amazon stats of 9 hours. I can beat that as my stats were last updated two days ago! What the devil is going on?! More

20/02/07 - Affiliate Marketing Distractions

If you are like me, you like to keep an eye on what is going on in the Internet affiliate marketing industry.

I started off, like many others, very close to ClickBank. I never sold their products, I just followed the free mailing lists offered by so-called gurus.

As time went on, I signed up for more and more free stuff. I now get at least 100 messages a day from affiliate marketers every day! That's at least 36,500 emails a year! More

18/02/07 - Ling's Got To Me!

Ling Valentine of Lings Cars fame and fortune has really got to me.

After seeing her on Dragon's Den and writing a brief summary of my thoughts, I have spent a lot more time reflecting what it is that makes her successful. More

13/02/07 - Project Evaluation

There are a few people who have contacted me recently loving the stuff that's here. That's good because I'm not doing it for me. I make £0 from this site despite the blatant advertising that surrounds it! Infact, it costs me money in hosting.

Having said that, it's a great feeling knowing I am helping others.

In the last lecture, I looked at the state of my portfolio. This lecture is more of an evaluation of the project so far and what you can learn from it. More

13/02/07 - Time To Get Going

Sometimes we all need a kick up the proverbial bottom and that's what I'm doing here.

I need to go through my sites and see where I need to improve. More

Perhaps not 100 years of articles but at least 100 articles!

It is nice to get past the first 100 as it allows reflection upon the past and vision to the future.

So far, the David Fiske project has seen the creation of www.comparesatnav.co.uk and has seen the (rough) logic behind developing a portfolio of sites.

So what does reader land have to look forward to in the next 900 articles (the next milestone is 1,000 lectures)? More

08/01/07 - I Fear It May Require a Portfolio

Here's the bad news. I think I have proved something so far!

I am not sure Compare Sat Nav can make billions on its own. I believe that through organic search listings, link exchanging and so forth, I can increase the visitor count but only so far.

At the end of the day, is currently the second highest performing site out of my portfolio and given the fact that the others have been running for around 1 to 2 years, this much progress in 5 weeks is great.

However, I do think I need to start work on a couple more niche websites as brothers and sisters for Compare Sat Nav. More

31/12/06 - Last Post For 2006. Welcome 2007.

The year ends with the following statistics:

1500 visitors with a 0.33% conversion.

£43.39 revenue with a £130.25 cost. Therefore I need to raise £86.86 to break even.

£456.61 left before I can afford some promotion. More

28/12/06 - Progress Report Four

It is nice to take a step back and see what we have achieved in life!

So here is report number four.

Compare Sat Nav is coming along in leaps and bounds. CompareSatNav.com has recently been registered by myself to add to the portfolio of domain names that this site uses ( www.comparesatnav.co.uk, www.comparesatnav.com and www.satnavreviews.co.uk ). More

18/12/06 - Progress Report Three

It is just about time to do another Progress Report.

In summary, Compare Sat Nav has nearly been completed from a design perspective, and is now awaiting content.

However, I do need to create a robust set of goals for the remainder of this year. More

04/12/06 - Progress Report Two

It is about time for another progress report.

The domain names have been registered as has the website hosting.

The website plan has been created and so to have the features. More

29/11/06 - Progress Report One

It may seem a bit early to create a progress report but why not start now?

So far in the lectures, we have covered how to identify niches and how to, in turn, identify if they are profitable.

Next I shall be deciding upon the topic for my new demo website and the process of how to set up a web host.
