Site Layout

My aim is to get www.comparesatnav.co.uk up and running very soon. Hopefully by the end of the week, perhaps the end of next, but definitely by Christmas.

So what am I going to have on the site?

To get the niche searches, I need product information on every satellite navigation system available in the UK at the moment. So I need to firstly have an index of all the satellite navigation systems available and then for each of these, I need a product information page.

I need a price comparison feature so I will need XML or CSV product feeds from retailers. There are usually free on most affiliate networks though only some retailers offer these.

I would also like auctions for new and used sat nav systems.

So let us look now at how much work is involved.

The sat nav manufacturers can provide system specifications and these should be available on their websites. Plus, retailers will have information too. This will be the longest part of the development but it is not difficult.

The affiliate networks will provide the CSV and XML feeds and I will use software I have purchased to manipulate these. These feeds will need to be updated once a week and this is a manual task. With 20 retailers, this could take as long as an hour to update everything.

Auctions will be self updating and so too will be any banners and advertising used.

Finally, I will need to keep an eye on the sat nav market and keep the site up to date. This is a monthly task though in the run up to Christmas, I would like it to be more frequent.

Other things I need include:

  • A page with discount vouchers and electronic coupons that visitors can use to save money on their shopping
  • A links page to exchange links with other sat nav and car sites
  • A mailing list to keep visitors coming back
  • A contact page, a terms page and a privacy policy page as we are collecting personal data (email addresses)
