After quite a bit of code hacking, I have now added an out of stock notification:

This will be updated at the same time as the prices.
Visitors can now see very clearly that at the last price check, a particular model was either in stock or not.
The benefit of this is that it will reduce customer frustration. Before this, customers would click on a price and discover that the product is out of stock. After a few of these, the visitor would leave, not purchasing anything.
Another benefit is that older sat nav systems can remain on the site and hence be spidered by search engines.
I do understand that the price checking may take longer but this should be no more than an extra 15 minutes per price check (which is currently 2 hours).
It should also be noted that even though the out of stock product is greyed out, it is still a hyperlink and the customer can still click through if required.
