Website Audiences and Brands

Scoreboard Media has posted an unbelievably brilliant quote on domain name and brands:

"An audience can be developed without a brand. A brand cannot be developed without an audience."
That sums up website traffic in a nutshell.

It's so good, here it is again:
"An audience can be developed without a brand. A brand cannot be developed without an audience."
You can get anyone to a website. Type in "free traffic" into Google and you'll get 177 million sites offering all sorts of wacky offers such as 1 million hits for 1 dollar. But this won't help your website.

Let's use a practical example of my lingerie website. I want it to be a brand that appears highly in the search engines. I could easily buy a million hits for a dollar but that isn't creating an audience, that's merely eating up bandwidth for the sake of it.

An audience is a group of people who want to view the site. They want lingerie and so they want to visit Lingerie Helper.

The more targeted people you can get to a site, the more chances you have at creating a brand. You may live and breathe a brand (such as Compare Sat Nav or Gifts of Crystal) but that's no good if no one else knows abut your brand.
