Tuesday, 21 August 2007
Over the past few months, new affiliate networks have popped up.
Fraser has highlighted a Swedish network targeting the UK called Affiliator (apparently bigger than Tradedoubler though I suggest not - and I don't seem to be the only one.)
I popped over to Affiliator to see what clients they have. This is where my question comes from!
Before I sign up to a network, I need to know what clients are on it's books. I don't want to sign up for umpteen different networks which all have the same clients. Yes, there is crossover but that's usually minor.
Advertising.com display 3 case studies at http://www.advertising.com/publishers/case_studies.php but that's all I could find in terms of brands. A dismal 1/10 as 3 for "the largest online network in the industry".
Affiliate Future scores 10/10 with their whopper of a list at http://www.affiliatefuture.co.uk/clients/default.asp
Affiliate Window have a full list at http://www.affiliatewindow.com/merchant_directory.php so 10/10 for you.
Affiliator shows 15 logos at http://www.affiliator.eu/customers.php - who are the rest? Where can I find this out from? 4/10.
Affilinet list 13 at http://affili.net/References/clientList.aspx but this list seems to be out of date (or at least, I don't have access to some of these). They also have some listed at http://affili.net/Start/default.aspx . I have given these 7/10 as it's a small network and they are only missing a handful of clients.
Buy.at lists a couple of brand names at http://www.buy.at/ but that's all I could find. I did find an example charity webshop which presumably lists all their clients - http://www.buy.at/poppyappeal - but it's not a list. 3/10 because of the demo webshop.
Cleverat lists 2 merchants at http://www.cleverat.com/Index.asp and suggests we sign up to view a complete list. 1/10 for the simple fact that 2 names have been mentioned.
Commission Junction have a list over at http://www.uk.cj.com/featured_advertisers.html so 10/10 here.
DGM Affiliates list 6 at http://www.dgmaffiliates.com/affiliates.html and a further 4 at http://www.dgmaffiliates.com/our-advertisers2.html . Poor show 4/10.
ePurple Media have a complete list at http://www.epurplemedia.co.uk/view_merchants.php netting them 10/10.
Linkshare list 7 brands on http://www.linkshare.com/uk/ but that's all I could find. 2/10.
OMG UK publish their client list at http://www.omguk.com/programmes.asp so they too get 10/10.
Congratulations to Paid on Results who list their programs here: http://www.paidonresults.com/merchants/all-merchants.html . Top marks 10/10!
Prime-Q list 8 programs at http://www.primeq.com/affiliates/ but that's all I could find. 2/10
Tradedoubler list some clients at http://tradedoubler.co.uk/pan/cms/portfolio but it's not a full client list so 7/10 for you.
Webgains don't appear to publish any merchant names which is a bit of a let down and perhaps a hindrance on affiliate signups. 0/10
Zanox list the latest 10 merchants and the top 10 merchants over at http://services.zanox.com/rss/en/affprog_new_GBR.html but I couldn't find anything that listed all merchants. Nevertheless, 4/10.
NOTE TO NETWORKS
The findings of this investigation are derived from looking at your website. If you scored 10/10, well done. If you scored less than that, you could really help affiliates by publishing your client lists. If you scored low but do have a full client list on your website, please post it as a comment below. What that shows is that your website is not accessible enough as a prospective affiliate may not be able to find the information they are looking for.
The rankings are for merchant lists only. They do not take into account any other factor (such as reputation, credibility, etc.)
Apologies to any networks left out from this list. If you have a client list on your site, please post a link to it in the comments section.
NOTE TO READERS
There's a website out there that aggregates all the programmes from a variety of networks. It was mentioned on A4U in the last few months but I can't remember what it was called. If you know, please link to it in a comment below. Thanks!

I didn't think to look there! I presumed signup was for the network, not individual programs.

Hi David,
I also found the aggregator site really handy as a merchant, as I can easily compare our commission rates with our competitors and others in the market. The URL is http://www.affiliatebounty....

Hi david,
Once you sign up to the first program it is essentially the same as signing up to the network and then on approval you will be able to sign up to our full range of programs.

Sarah - That's the one I couldn't find. I remember using it before when it was first released.
Chris - That kind of defeats the object of this post as it was all about finding out client lists without having to sign up. Anyway, Kerry listed the address of the relevant page on buy.at above.

Hi David,
Webgains have published our merchant list in the most public of places, the affiliate forum. All affiliates can see what merchants we have available at any point. We also provide a spreadsheet with stats on the programs' performance alongside commission rates, cookie period, ppc policy, datafeed info; all you have to do is contact any of the account managers on email, phone, msn, ticket system.
Thanks
Hero

also, our merchants are all listed in the Affiliate Bounty directory (which is what you were looking for), who we provide with a daily updated datafeed with our programs' information
thanks

Great post David :) I agree that not being able to see a client list definitely puts me off signing up.

Hi David,
Thanks for the appreciation. We will continue adhering to these policies & make as much information accessible to our Affiliates, as required to selelct a network & join a Merchant program.

Thanks for your feedback David. Will try to convince Affiliator to make a full or atleast a more comprehensive client list.
Affiliator are biggest when it comes to the amount of Affiliate programs, almost 140 in Scandinavia.
But when it comes to revenue, there are bigger networks in the Nordic region. Thought it was written clear enough, but obviously not :)

@Hero - A client list is meaningless on a forum. It should be on the network's page. Not every new affiliate marketer knows which forums to look in. Nevertheless, I do acknowledge that this information is in the public domain which is a good thing.
@Fraser - Thanks :-)
@Smita - Thanks as well :-)
@Markus - Thank you for trying to get Affiliator to publish a client list. As for size, Tradedoubler are currently reporting 344
programs via their interface. How can Affiliator be bigger with just 140 programs or is this 140 programs in Scandinavia alone?

Not seeing a client list can be a turn of, but then again it is free to join up with all affiliate networks and if you have to pay then you should be weary of that. Once you have joined the network and have been approved, then you can see what sort of clients they have.
I would say that Tradedoubler and AffiliateWindows has the best UK client list so far.

As someone with a group of websites targeting a defined group of people, I want to be able to read what merchants are available immediately. I work with several networks, but I don't want to have to sign up to a] find nothing /nobody there that I can use and b] have the network then try to push clients I don't need or want in my direction.

Hi David,
it was for Scandinavia alone that Affiliator got more affiliate programs then Tradedoubler.

Hi David,
I agree with you for the most part - as an affiliate manager, when trying to find out more about a network and the kind of clients they have on board it's pretty frustrating when you can't get the information you want easily. However, buy.at do have a comprehensive list (although it's a bit tricky to find). You can get it at http://www.buy.at/affiliate... .
But yes, you're right it's REALLY FRUSTRATING when networks don't publish a list of clients!
