After reading this A4U Thread about VAT and Google Adwords, I reclaimed a nice wad of cash. OK, maybe not that nice as it was only $25!
The problems came when I tried to cash a US Dollar cheque in the UK.
I discovered my handy bank was going to charge me £12 to cash the cheque. $25 USD is today worth £12.55 according to XE. So I would net myself £0.55!
My cheque was in US dollars because that's how I set my account up. I was wise to the fact that $5 activation is around £2.50 and $0.04 minimum bid is around £0.02. I saved £2.50 on the activation fee and my minimum click prices are lower. Given that I get no extra charges from my credit card provider for paying in US dollars, it was a no-brainer.
I went back to Google and asked if they could issue a GBP cheque. No can do because I set the account up in dollars. I suggested account credit and they said nope because they had to issue a cheque.
So I was stumped.
Enter Auctionchex! Their website isn't great but there service more than makes up for that.
Here's how it works.
You register on the site. You tell them the amount on the cheque and they convert that at their (slightly poor) exchange rate. They slap on a £0.95 fee for doing this and that's it. You send them the cheque, and they send you one back in GBP.
For affiliates starting with Clickbank or other affiliate programs that will only pay in USD, I highly recommend using Auctionchex. For small amounts, they are brilliant. When you are processing large amounts, the value dwindles somewhat as the exchange rate they use can easily eat a couple of hundred pounds on a few thousand dollar cheque.
If I hadn't of used them, I would have got £0.25 for my cheque using my bank. Auctionchex sent me a cheque for just shy of £10. What's more, I sent the letter off Monday afternoon and got the cheque back on Wednesday morning. How's that for service?!
Overall, a very pleasant experience of Auctionchex and I wouldn't hesitate in using them again.

All of my payments are in GBP so getting a USD cheque was a bit daunting. Perhaps when my Clickbank empire takes off, I will get a USD account. Makes more sense if you're processing a lot of USD cheques.

Wow, your bank is pricey. Who are you with?
Sounds like you found the best thing to do with your cheque, but just for comparison purposes, I'm with HSBC and they charge £5 for foreign cheques up to the value of £100 (after conversion) and £10 for amounts between £101 and £5000.
Actually just recently got myself a USD account with HSBC for putting my US payments into as well.
