Your Affiliate-Merchant Relationships

I've registered to too many affiliate programs! In fact, I'm registered with too many affiliate networks. I sign up for programs that may be useful and that I thought may have worked well but inevitably they don't.

In this last year, I've managed to find a couple of good programs and I need to start focusing on sending them more traffic.

So is it worth the time and effort promoting hundreds of programs or just a handful?

I suppose it depends on the type of site you are running.

Take a voucher code or cashback website for instance. It's in your best interest to have as many different affiliate programs listed as possible. The more companies listed, the more mis-spellings can be generated, the more keyword rich content pages can be created and ultimately more traffic can be generated.

But even in this case, you don't necessarily need every merchant. I recently posted about dead voucher codes and was suprised on how much traffic I got for words on that page, proving you can get started with just one merchant.

For a comparison website, it could also benefit you t have a lot of merchants. More merchants again equates to more pages of content.

But there is a risk of dilution if you have too many merchants and what you have to ask yourself is "will I lose anything by promoting a handful of merchants?". A carefully selected small group of merchants could server you better than as many as you can find.

At the end of the day, content is king and it is probably better to focus on a small but reliable group of merchants than trying to have all of them. I personally would rather deal with a handful of quality merchants and send them quality, targeted traffic rather than trying to splatter-gun hundreds of them with potential prospects.
