Recommend a Camcorder?

With digital photographic cameras, I know where I am. I know I need a good brand, with a good optical zoom and high megapixel rating. Job's a good 'un. My current camera was the crème de la crème when I bought it 3 years and it's still a good quality camera today, packing a punch to some of today's rivals.

But when it comes to digital camcorders, I'm not sure where I stand. So I'm asking you to recommend a camcorder! All you have to do is tell me what camcorder is best in your opinion in the comments section below.

Ideally, I'm looking for something with a great quality picture and a good battery life. We're also talking about taking around 8 hours of footage if that helps in any way!

Also, I need a camera that can provide reasonably still footage (no or few wobbles) and is great in low light indoors as well as bright outdoors. I'm not sure whether this is possible with a budget of around £500 but an external microphone would be good too!

Thank you to everyone who contributes. I've also posted a request at A4U.

This is for your wedding is it?!? Can't help you at all, but Duncan and I have also decided to invest in one after seeing a friends video from when we were all in Thailand... so I shall be watching this space closely!

I'm not much help at the momeny David as I'm on the lookout for exactly the same thing. I've been looking at some Sony HDD camcorders but there has been a lot of reviews saying they're not good in lowlight.

I'm now doing some research on the HD camcorders and will let you know how I get on if you're interested?

To get all you've listed will be a challenge. You can get each of the items you're after but I think you might have to pay just over the £500 mark - full price that is.

A few to start you off Sony HDR-10E, Canon HG10, Canon HV20. Maybe also try the Sony HDR-SR5E, currently reduced from £725 to £490 on Amazon.co.uk

The HV20 seems to be coming out tops at the moment.

Hi David - I did a little site about the HV20. Have a look at the example videos I've posted up - they're stunning even after being compressed and uploaded to youtube. http://canon.hv20.co.uk

I am considering getting the HV20 but I am still undecided about format. Any tape based machine, as the HV20 is, seems a retrograde step in 2008 but from what I've read it's easier to edit the footage than HD on memory cards.
