New Permanent Design

Automatically changing designs seemed such a good idea when I set about creating them but six months in, I've gone off them. I must have been taking something because the colour schemes where horrid!

So jumping on the bandwagon that is known as the redesign train, I've joined Kirsty, Keith, Amazon, Play and CD-Wow in launching a new template.

The new design is a blend of the designs thus far, and makes use of a wider space.

I've also added a blogroll which I foolishly removed many moons ago.

Comments appreciated.

Like the design of the site, but all the affliate links majorly slow your site down when it loads.

@Peter Wallhead - It's those pesky widgets! Bumpzee seems to be quite slow as does Blogrush. I've also got some code in from A4U (the 'Back Me').

There's only 1 affiliate banner that shows on each item page which is significantly less than other blogs I regularly read. Nevertheless, I take the speed issue on board and will look into it.

@Perfumes - It loads instantly here. Speed appears to be a recurring theme here. I'll keep an eye on it.

UPDATE: I've just run a speed test and it loads in 4 seconds according to an independent website. In comparison, A4U took 38 seconds and Google took 1 second.

Looks great, Dave - and loads with no problems at all for me. I would possibly say that the grey used for footer text and section headers on the right is a tad too light to be easily readable but the overall look of the site is very nice.

@Rob - What are you doing looking all the way down there?! I'll darken them a tad. Power to the people!

I really like it and speed hasn't been an issue tbh (on both home and work computers). Just wondering - the mammoths - is there a personal reason for them or were they just cool icons?
Personal preference but how about previous/next post links? Seeing as you seem to have had a boost of posts today, it's nice to be able to flick through them.

@Phil - I liked the mammoths. Just personal preference really.

I used to have next/prev links but they never worked properly. I'll check and see if anyone's released a bug fix as I agree it would be nice to see them return.

UPDATE: They now appear underneath the "You may also be interested in reading:" section.

Like the new redesign. I've enjoyed reading your blog more recently but the old design was shocking :P. I'm glad you've changed it.

@Roshan - Thanks for the comment. I must have been taking something dodgy when I cam up with the previous colour schemes. Why I though bright pink, lilac and bright yellow was a good idea is beyond me!

Hi David, I just loaded this page on Broadband ADSL (256K) with IE7 and it took 1min 35sec to finish loading completely. It was mainly the Bumbzee and Blogrush widgets again I think, like you mentioned above.

David

@Peter Wallhead - Thanks for your test. I cleared my cache and in IE7 on a 3MB broadband connection, it took 3 seconds and in FF2 it took 6 seconds.

It seems to be hit and miss at the moment! I don't want to lose the widgets but it appears I may have to.
