In preparation for my trip to Orlando (care of Sunshine), I went on the hunt for a decent currency exchange.
The going rate at the time was around £1:$1.80.
I stumbled across Crown Currency Exchange who offer various rates for US dollars, Aus dollars, NZ dollars, Can dollars and euros.
Having never heard of them I did a bit of research and found out a very important point:
They appear not to have financial protection which means if they went bust, I'd lose my money.
So I had to weigh up whether it was worth the risk. I'd found Crowne Currency Exchange reviews dating back to January 2008 and all posts said Crown were very reputable.
I transferred a considerable amount of money to them and arranged delivery for Tuesday 26th August 2008. This left a few days to hurry down over to the Post Office website as a backup in case everything went Pete Tong.
I can confirm my order arrived, with fresh brand new dollars in various denominations on Saturday 23rd August 2008. I'll certainly use them again for the honeymoon as I'll need dollars to settle my bills then.
So was it worth the risk? By paying 6 weeks in advance, I bagged a rate of £1:$1.96.
If I bought from them today for delivery asap, the rate is £1:$1.80 - I made £50 profit by paying 6 weeks in advance.
Out of interest I checked the Post Office and the best rate from them today is £1:$1.79.
If you are willing to take a risk on future rates, I would highly recommend Crown Currency Exchange. I'm very impressed with their service, their customer support and their rates!
Now I'd appreciate the exchange rate to go back up in time for Christmas. £1:$2.10 would be nice :-)
