SunPress Extreme! – Part Two

So the last post walked you through what the widgets look like and the content side of things. This post will walk you through the SunPress side of things.

Here’s the process of booking a holiday using SunPress right out of the box:

Step 1) Flights

Flights search

Step 2) Hotels

Hotels search

Step 3) Transfers

Transfers search

The customer then sees a summary and goes off to pay for their holiday.

My version is more or less the same, just a little fancier:

Step 1) Flights

New flights search

I've tweaked a few things. Firstly, I've added airline logos as I feel that brand logos speak louder than plain text. Also, I've changed the summary above the prices table to read better. So, for example, "2009-06-01 > 14 nts > Ads:2 Ch:0 > MAN - SFB" has become:

"You searched for:

  • A flight between MAN and SFB

  • An outbound flight departing on Monday 1st June 2009

  • A return flight on Monday 15th June 2009

  • A flight for 2 adults and 0 children"
I've also jazzed up the table and emphasised both the price and the "Book" buttons.

Step 2) Hotels

New Hotels Search

Again, I've dressed the page up and added a more detailed summary at the top. I've tried to separate the hotels more and drawn focus towards the prices. Big, bold and friendly.

Step 3) Transfers

New transfers search

The transfers page is again more colourful. The prices stand out more I feel. The summary page that follows then shows the prices in large print with a nice big "book" button to complete the buying process.

So what’s the point? Well, to be honest, the point is that if you put the time in, you can tailor SunPress to meet your requirements. I wanted a more user-friendly interface matched to the style of my blog.

Some people have asked what can be done with SunPress and what I've done is present one solution. SunPress is a versatile widget that can be customised immensely to suit a whole host of needs and thus there are millions of solutions to how it can be used.

Now it’s your turn. Have you played around with SunPress? If so, leave a comment here so that other people can see what you’ve done with it.

Really nice work David. It's also more consistent with sunshine.co.uk who the customer completes their booking with so that's good. Just a thought : I would be a bit cautious on the text about the flights though with your longhaul honeymoon deals - just because of the way passengers, in my experience with real customers, often get really confused about the extra day required for their flight with the time difference and everything it's typical to land +1day

Wow - Loving what you've done with Sunpress David!

How did you make these changes? Have you just hacked the wp-sunshine.php file? And wouldn't that be overwritten, losing all your changes when you upgrade to the next version of Sunpress?

Just read Part One which probably answers my questions lol - trust me to do everything back to front!

I'm going to have a good play with this tomorrow, and I'll let you know how I get on!

@Rob Barham - The date is the same as what is output in the original script, it's just formatted differently.

I certainly take your comments on board, having been longhaul twice in the 12 months (ooh, look at me!) and have gotten easily confused about the return date :-)

@Lammo - I've tinkered with the core files which is certainly a risk. I've had to change the version number to prevent it being automatically upgraded.

Naturally, the downside is that I can't upgrade without re-hacking the code. Hopefully the conversions will outweigh this minor inconvenience :-)

Joe

Thanks for the information.

Don't think I could customise mine like that but will give it a shot.

Cheers
