Define Affiliate Marketing (Poll)

Affiliate marketing is a tricky business to liken to anything else, making it difficult to explain to people what it is I do. The best I have come up with is that I'm a telesales marketer using websites rather than phones, in that it is my job to convince someone that double glazing really is what they want to buy online.

"I sell things through websites" usually doesn't quite hit the spot and sometimes I'm simply a website developer, as it's easier to explain what they do.

In a slightly interactive post (here goes 0 comments!), tell me how you would define affiliate marketing. Is there anything you have used to explain to people what it is you do that is simply genius? Have you come up with a back to basics definition? Comments on a postcard below :-)

Taking advantage of badly designed websites that have not been marketed correctly - helping visitors find their (my affiliates) products.

This sounds like a very arrogant view, but this is the way I work and find niches where I know I can outrank competitors.

Good question.

Why do affiliate networks refer to 'advertisers' when the courts have looked at what affiliates actually do and judged it to be far more than being paid to display an ad (most likely an affiliate link) and paid for click thrus? Amazon does the same. Its contract for associates expressly states it pays advertising fees when it is really paying for sales.
